Watching Apple consistently market year after year the Apple Watch with minor changes to its design while adding a feature here and there is indeed impressive. The minimal alterations to its appearance may not necessitate an annual purchase, but the routine refresh can feel somewhat mundane. However, a recent rumor suggests a potential game-changer on the horizon: the introduction of a plastic Apple Watch SE. Initially sparked by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s mention of it last month, the idea seemed intriguing but was quickly forgotten. In a recent update to his Power On newsletter subscribers, Gurman hinted that Apple’s use of plastic aims to enhance the watch’s appeal to children by offering a broader color selection. This revelation struck a chord. It’s possible that this could be the most thrilling Apple Watch update in years.

The Apple Watch boasts an appealing design with a variety of colors, yet the repeated muted palette options have become somewhat monotonous over the years. The selection typically revolves around black-ish, silver, and a hint of pink, with Starlight offering a subtle touch of yellow. For those seeking a bolder choice, Product Red stands out.

While Apple has experimented with vibrant colors in other products like the iMac and non-pro iPhones, such as the charming seafoam green iPhone 12 mini, the potential for more diverse color options in the Watch SE is intriguing. Although unlikely to include the vivid hues reminiscent of 90s Nickelodeon, a move towards colors like the mid-cycle purple or banana-yellow iPhone refreshes seems plausible.

The challenge lies in balancing the Watch SE’s appeal as a great smartwatch with its limitations compared to the mainline “Series” watches. While additional health sensors may not be a deal-breaker, features like faster on-device Siri and double-tap gesture from Series 9 are hard to let go of. Incorporating these functionalities into the Watch SE, along with introducing vibrant color choices, could make it a compelling option for those in the market for a more affordable wearable device.
